Church Bells

A brief history...

St Leonard’s is proud of its long bell-ringing tradition — and for many years it held the distinction of being the last church in Hove to keep its own team of ringers. Our tower houses a ring of six bells: five were given to the church by Mrs Ingram in 1878, with the sixth added by Revd Henry Ingram in 1891, when the celebrated bell-founder John William Taylor — famous for casting Great Paul at St Paul’s Cathedral and Great Walter at Chichester Cathedral — re-cast the ring.

The bells were later taken down in 1948 to be re-tuned before being restored to the tower. Over the years our ringers have marked great national and parish occasions, from a full muffled peal in memory of Queen Victoria in 1901, to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, to ringing out across Aldrington for the centenary of the Armistice in 2018.

Ringing schedule

We ring regularly on Monday evenings, finishing by 9pm, and following the recent renovation project to the church we are looking forward to ringing more on Sunday mornings, sounding a call to worship across the parish, and for special events.
